Modern Renaissance: Artist Eva Haughie

Visual artists who were scientists, poets, humanists and mentors marked the luminous period in history described as the Renaissance. Today, in a world increasingly segmented and specialized, Eva Haughie is an extraordinary artist who continues this tradition in her own unique way.
With a B.S. in Chemistry, Haughie also pursued her other passion for visual arts. Her vibrant presence and the twists and turns of her life are revealed in her work, which boldly ranges from representational to symbolic and abstract. Varying scales and media include grand murals, delicate watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels and collages. Her natural inclination to question and play has also led to a vast alchemy of unexpected materials, such as frying crayons, using pastels with starch, colored pencil shavings, candy and bubblegum as well as unusual approaches to traditional media. Her roots in science still surface in pieces such as a commissioned DNA-inspired painting.
Haughie took master-level workshops with Jacqueline Penney, Carl Molno, Frank Webb, Paul Wood, Dan Weldon, Janet Walsh and others. Following in the steps of these and many other phenomenal masters, Haughie explores different aspects of landscapes, floral subjects, wildlife, figures and abstracts. “Sometimes I begin with busy, frenetic compositions and end with a calmer resolution, while other times, I carefully plan a series, but always am immersed in the process of creating.”
Haughie’s strong connection to Long Island is expressed in a mural commissioned mural located at The Maples in Manorville. This breathtaking painting enhances a storage container with an image of Steam Engine #39, which ran for the LIRR from 1844 until 1955. Haughie’s use of historic documents and photos as source materials shifts the viewer into a time-warp as the painted train seems to pass by, blending into the surrounding landscape.
For art lovers and collectors, journeying through Haughie’s sparkling and intense use of color and design as well as her strength of spirit is an experience not to be missed.
