MORE ABOUT THIS
SERIES: |
In 1991, after I finished "A
Thank You Note To God," I asked God for inspiration for a new series. I thought
of painting about our great trips to New York City. However, my first
painting looked like two frightened buildings and more paintings followed in the
same weird vein. I couldn't control one painting as it erupted in clouds of
grey as if something was wrong with the paper. (Go Without Direction). I tried
to change some of the images and even drew a (life) line to connect what seemed
like a body floating in mid air. I also tried to revise one painting, "Chasing
Fear," in an attempt to suppress what looked violent only to see it evolve into
a more disturbing imagery.
Finally I just accepted these paintings as they were because I really felt God's
presence in this, and so, I left them alone and I hid them away on a shelf. In
1998 I took them down and I found titles in the Bible by praying and then
randomly opening to a page. Each title was taken from the first words I saw on
the page.
Through the years, I never understood when people said that some of my paintings
looked like 911 but on July 24, 2004 I finally saw a resemblance when I saw an
online photo of the twin towers in flames. (Go Without Direction)
I asked a retired NYC firefighter to look at these paintings. He studied “Go
Without Direction” for several minutes. Then he wanted to know what made me
paint two things in particular. The first, I said, “I don’t know, I just did.”
He said that it was “the exact silhouette of the firehouse across from the World
Trade Towers.” When he asked about a second area, I said, “I felt this painting
needed a safe place and I made it there.” He said, “Well, this looks like it
could be the Exchange Building, which we were fearful for, but it remained
safe.”
Not knowing what to think about what he said, I looked to the Bible, again,
prayed, then opened to a random page,
1 Corinthians 1, Verse 31: "If anyone is going to boast, let him boast only of
what the Lord has done."
A second reading, was a surprise, Ezekiel 3, Verse 12, 13: "I heard behind me
the sound of a great earthquake. It was the noise of wings of the winged beings
as they touched against each other and the sound of their wheels beside them."
Even though it wasn't unusual for me to get meaningful readings, I hadn't known
the Bible had a verse about winged beings with wheels.
